We would recommend playing it on a hard surface for sound disbursement.It comes with a set of 2 well designed mallets / beaters / sticks which are the correct material and weight blend for the keys / notes on this particular xylophone.Keys or notes are the metal pieces on top of the frame of a xylophone / glockenspiel. The 25 note / 27 note / 30 note and 32 note xylophones are quite similar except for a few notes different on each. The more notes, the more options however we have found that the 27 note is the most favoured mixture of affordability, size, note variance and sound variance.
